Client classification

The Financial Conduct Authority requires financial services firms to classify clients so that the appropriate level of regulatory protection can be applied.

Most individual clients will normally be treated as retail clients, which provides the highest level of regulatory protection.

Different protections may apply to professional clients, eligible counterparties and certain organisations.

Financial Services Compensation Scheme

You may be entitled to compensation from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) if a regulated financial services firm is unable to meet valid claims against it.

Whether compensation is available, and the amount that may be paid, depends on the type of financial service or product involved and the circumstances of the claim.

Investments

For eligible investment claims against firms that failed on or after 1 April 2019, FSCS protection may be available up to:

£85,000 per eligible person, per firm.
This does not protect against ordinary investment losses simply because an investment falls in value or performs less well than expected.

Mortgage advice

For eligible claims relating to mortgage advice against firms that failed on or after 1 April 2019, FSCS protection may be available up to:

£85,000 per eligible person, per firm.

Insurance

The level of FSCS protection for insurance depends on the type of policy and claim.

Certain eligible insurance claims are protected at 100%, while other eligible general insurance claims may be protected at 90% with no upper limit.

Full eligibility rules and current compensation limits are available from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
